Event details
In 2024, O Cinema ANYWHERE features "Alien" by Carla Forte, a collection of 20 AR video portraits documenting the important role of Latinas in our community. The works are planned for installation along Phase 1 of Miami's Underline, a 10-mile linear park, urban trail, and public art destination that transforms the land below Miami's Metrorail into a vibrant cultural landmark.
In September, award-winning prolific filmmaker Carla Forte released Miki Maniaco, a dark, twisted vision of exile, celebrity, and South Florida and was named Best Film Director in 2023 by Miami New Times. She is a Venezuelan-born multidisciplinary artist based in Miami and an active member of Bistoury Physical Theater and Film, a non-profit organization whose mission is to carry out research and development while taking aesthetic and physical risks that break the pre-established boundaries between dance, theater, and film. Forte's project "Alien" involves identifying 20 Latinas from varying backgrounds and interviewing them about their migrations to Florida and their experiences living here. Breaking ground as a living, interactive, historical, and interpretive document, each portrait will be made accessible to the public via QR codes posted at different locations along the Underline.
O Cinema's ANYWHERE aims to play with AR's potential as a medium for public art, a vehicle for social commentary and as a platform for understanding. The project will bring new media artworks into the daily lives of residents and visitors alike to the Underline. Visitors will experience true stories of migrant women as they are interpreted through the lens of an artist.
This exhibition is made possible thanks to the generous support of CreARTE/Perez Family Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, Artes Miami, Miami Dade County, Bistoury Physical Theater and Film, MUD Foundation and The Underline.
Artist Statement

In my role as an artist, my primary objective is to articulate my personal and societal concerns, with a specific focus on the Latina Women communities in South Florida. I thrive on experimenting with novel visual experiences, crafting a realm where we can transmute our stories and Latin American experiences into art and beauty. I explore various artistic disciplines, including dance, film, and performance, to construct this transformative universe. Within my artistic practice, I must weave in feminine messages that foster social consciousness, establishing a connection between narrative and identity. I am dedicated to amplifying the voices of the marginalized, striving to fortify and unite them within our Latino communities. My passion lies in actively contributing to social change through my art, particularly in women's movements. By doing so, I aim to enable the broader audience to resonate with and vicariously experience the emotions and sensations inherent in the world of Latin American Women.
